Fountains of the lukewarm, we drink each day. Tepid coffee, morning exchanges, countdowns until Friday. It’s barely nine in the morning on Monday and the target is to get to the end of the week.

Another end.

Time—time is relative, I’ve been told. I guess that’s why some days can feel so fleeting while others seem so slow.

My surroundings are filled with faded photos, beaten carpet, and desks on three legs: a localized entropy.

The earth is forever in motion, but the people living upon this orb can be self-destructive and cruel.

Rivers of surrender race through these halls, ceding to frames of control. We stay because we have no choice. We stay because… we “because” until we wake up one day and are told to leave.

We have bills to pay and people who need the money we earn more than they actually need us.

We lift our glasses and toast to health, omitting that success is akin to serving a false narrative of fleeting euphoria.

Can you understand that we are not going back?

Can you fathom the invisible ghosts that engulf and slowly destroy any sense of spiritual growth or hope we once clung to?

They recite a list of rationalizations, trying to soften the blow of never measuring up to who we once thought we would be, while forgetting the times we actually succeeded.

Happiness, contentedness—it is relative, changing its reasoning moment by moment.

I didn’t want to pretend. I never wanted to fit in. I never could afford the pounds of flesh and my soul it costs to belong.

Watching the years pass by in pretense, life is fleeting, reduced to a countdown until the next act.

What is the answer?

Where is the key?

So many ancient words recited and so much history to learn from.

Blinded by reality, my shades cannot protect my eyes. True faith is blind, and being blind means not being able to see.I reach for the handle. I open the door…
